Namib
Desert
Characterised by the desolate Namib Desert
and semi-arid, sunbaked savanna with its
yellowish-brown tints and characteristic
euphorbia and aloe plant species. The area
is possessed of a stark beauty, challenged
only by the northern Skeleton Coast, which
creates its own mystery and provides an opportunity
for outdoor adventures.
Sossusvlei
A very popular destination
is Sossusvlei which is a sand dune wonderland,
with towering
red dunes up to 300 m high (highest dunes
in the world) surrounding a huge, dried-up
pan. Dunes extend as far as the eye can see
and their rich tints vary from pale apricot
to vivid reds and oranges. The pan attracts
birdlife and wild life such as oryx, springbok
and ostriches which feed off the sparse vegetation
along the watercourses.
Etosha National Park
Established in 1907, this is one of the major sanctuaries for wildlife in Africa.
The heart of the park is the Etosha Pan an extensive, flat depression of about
5 000 sq km. This great, white expanse is a place of shimmering mirages and migrating
herds. This national treasure has been excellently managed and preserved, making
it one of the greatest and most important game parks on the sub-continent.
There are 144 mammal species in the park including all the major predators and
antelope while also being home to 340 species of birds.
